Disposal Care and Repair

Having a garbage disposal in NYC can be a big time saver.  The combination of small apartment spaces and mandatory garbage pick up days requires the average New Yorker to regulate the amount of trash that gets thrown out. With a garbage disposal, a lot of odiferous, organic waste by products can be removed from your solid trash stream and be dealt with directly in the sink.

Owning a garbage disposal is extremely helpful, but it is important to make sure that the appliance receives regular maintenance and care. A neglected disposal will result in an expensive, and often easily avoided plumbing bill. A common problem experienced by owners is a foul smell that is emitted by a dirty disposal.

Decaying food often can get trapped within the machinery of a disposal. If an owner is tepid towards cleaning, decaying food can build up and release foul orders in the apartment.  Routine cleaning of the appliance will limit occurrences of a displeasing smell, but if the mass of food is too large, a deeper cleaning is necessary.
The first step towards a simple cleaning is to turn on the faucet of the sink and run a thick stream of hot water down the drain. This process should take approximately 30 seconds and should push the malodorous particles through the pipes, and out of your apartment.  Importantly, this process should be executed every time the garbage disposal is operated.

If the smell still lingers, fill the sink basin with a solution of water and grease-cutting dishwasher detergent. Next turn the disposal on and allow the sink to drain while the blades of the disposal administer the solution evenly throughout the pipes.  Next, turn the appliance off and clean the blades and flaps with nylon sink brush.  Lastly, run the tap, with the disposal, for 30 seconds to clean the sink.

An alternative method for clearing out a foul smell is using backing soda as a deodorizing agent. With ½ a cup of baking soda, ½ a cup of vinegar, and some water, foul smelling bacteria can be eliminated from your disposal.  Pour the solution into the sink; let it sit for an hour and your odor should be eliminated.

If these home remedies fail, it is always best to contact a plumber in NYC.  A plumber in NYC can help fix your garbage disposal, no matter what the problem is.  They often have expensive equipment that is better left off in professional hands.
